Word is that Rei Kawakubo, the head designer and founder of Comme des Garcons, is doing a collaboration with the Beatles. The collection is going to focus mainly on bags, but there will also be some shirts involved. Shirts will be about $115.00, and bags will go up to $860.00. Doesn’t that price seem a bit high, considering the collection won’t be using any leather goods because good ol’ Paul McCartney is an advocate of vegetarianism and animal rights? Is it just me, or does it seem like every singer/band starts doing a collaboration with a designer at some point? I have mixed feelings on this issue. It is very rare to be born with singing, acting, and designing talents. Pick what you are best at, and focus on that. I always feel like celebrities are taking a pretty big gamble by going into a field they don’t know much about. Why would they risk getting a bad name for themselves when they have already been turned into stars? However, I am open-minded, and like to see what the end products always are. Hey, maybe I am wrong this time. They are estimating a $5 million wholesale volume in just the first year. Who knows where the collection will go. Comme de Garcons signed a three-year licensing deal with Apple Corps, which is the London-based company that manages the Beatles. This gives Rei all rights to all of the Beatles imagery, photos, and graphics. Keep an eye out for this new collection. It is going to launch in Tokyo on November 20, and then in 2010, it will hit more areas of the world. Lets come together and support the Beatles!
