We all know Tom Ford as the one who saved Gucci from going bankrupt back in the ’90’s. When Tom Ford came on board with the Gucci team, sales had a major increase of 90%. …”Gucci was at an estimated $4.3 billion” (Alicia, zimbio.com). It looks like Mr. Ford is trying to get back in the game! Rumor is that he is going to start a new woman’s RTW (ready to wear) collection in the near future. Don’t get me wrong, Tom is a very talented designer. In a 2001 fall collection he did for Gucci, he was unlike many of the other designers, because his collection was made so woman could actually wear the garments. What a great concept…a designer creating clothes that can actually be worn in the real world?! No, how could it be?! I do have a lot of respect for Tom Ford, because a lot of designers come up with over the top designs (usually which are jaw dropping), but they can’t actually be worn. What’s the fun in that? Women want to be able to wear the clothes designers design for them! Although, there is something about flamboyant garments that get me googlie- eyed every time. So, the big question is, is Tom Ford’s new RTW collection going to be a great victory or a great defeat? Some people believe that Tom Ford’s designs are too commercial. “Commercial is a compliment, it will mean people will buy it,” Tom Ford said. You can only wonder if people now, in the economical struggle, will want to purchase garments that are “too commercial”. There are so many citizens that can barely afford keeping their homes, how are they going to afford purchasing high end garments, especially ones that are too commercial? If people are buying, they are going to want something that is different, and stands out; otherwise they would just keep the wardrobe they have instead of shopping! Tom Ford believes that the economy is getting better everyday, so he is positive that his new collection will do just fine. Just because your men’s label is doing better than a lot of other designers right now, doesn’t mean your women’s label will do the same. As hard as it may be to believe, people are actually really struggling right now, and aren’t as fortunate as Mr. Ford. Maybe it is hard to see what the rest of the world is going through when you are rolling in green!
